Warlimagu

Yindjibarndi · “clean”

A name with a responsibility

Warlimagu means “clean” in the Yindjibarndi language. For a business that looks after buildings, sites and the places people live and work, it is a simple and honest name.

It is also more than a description of the work. Taking a Yindjibarndi word as our name is a statement of who stands behind this business, of our obligation to Country, and of the community whose trust made it possible.

Who they are

Juluwarlu exists to collect, sustain and promote knowledge of Yindjibarndi culture: Country, language, family history, stories and law, kept strong for children and future generations.

Its cultural recording work was started in 1998 by Lorraine Coppin with Elder Woodley King and his grandson Michael Woodley at Ngurrawaana, on the Yindjibarndi tablelands. Juluwarlu was incorporated in 2000 and became the first lasting place in Roebourne dedicated to recording local culture.

Today its work spans archiving, language preservation, mapping Country, the Juluwarlu Art Group, and broadcasting and media.

Connection to Warlimagu

Juluwarlu's stated aim is to empower Aboriginal people in their cultural, social and economic pursuits. Warlimagu is part of the economic side of that aim.

Like Juluwarlu, Warlimagu is based in the Pilbara, close to Yindjibarndi Country. The cleaning, property and facilities contracts we carry out across the Pilbara are a way to build local jobs, skills and income for the community that stands behind the business.

Country

Yindjibarndi Country

Pilbara, Western Australia

The Yindjibarndi are the Traditional Custodians of a large area of the Pilbara, centred on the Fortescue River and its tributaries and running from the Hamersley Range in the south across the spinifex plains to the north.

They have lived on, travelled across and cared for this Country for tens of thousands of years. Its rivers, ranges, gorges and the permanent pools of Millstream hold the knowledge and memory of the people who belong to it.

Today most Yindjibarndi people live in Roebourne, with communities at Cheeditha, just outside town, and at Ngurrawaana, whose name means “a place of homecoming”.

The Yindjibarndi hold native title over more than 13,000 square kilometres of the Pilbara, including over 2,700 square kilometres recognised by the Federal Court in a landmark 2017 determination.
